Akshay Kumar’s latest film Sarfira, a remake of the Tamil hit Soorarai Pottru, has recorded one of the lowest opening day collections of his career. The film, which also stars Radhika Madan, Paresh Rawal and Seema Biswas, opened to poor advance bookings and low occupancy throughout the day on July 12.
As per early estimates, Sarfira collected only around ₹2.25-2.50 crore net on its opening day. This is on par with the opening of Akshay’s previous low-performing films like Selfiee and Mission Raniganj. The pre-sales of Sarfira were also trending below these films, with just around ₹32 lakh gross and 15.6K tickets sold for the opening day as of July 11.
Review of Sarfira : Akshay Kumar is Back
Trade experts had predicted a modest opening in the range of ₹5-6 crore for Sarfira. However, the final numbers came in even lower. The film faced challenges from the holdover success of Kalki 2898 AD and the release of Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2 on the same day.
Sarfira’s subject matter and remake status also worked against it, as films with similar themes have struggled in the post-COVID era. While the initial word of mouth seems positive, it will be an uphill battle for the film to make up for the dismal start. Akshay Kumar will be hoping the film sees growth over the weekend, but the low opening puts a lot of pressure on its future performance.
