The 26-year-old all-rounder sent an official letter to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Thursday, July 11, 2024, requesting to be relieved of his captaincy duties.
Wanindu Hasaranga stated in his resignation letter that he believes it is in the best interest of the team that he steps down as captain and remains as a player.
“Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always,” Hasaranga said in his letter.

His resignation comes after Sri Lanka’s early exit from the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, where they failed to progress from the group stage.
SLC has accepted his resignation, but confirmed that he will remain an important player in their international plans going forward.
Sri Lanka is set to host India for a three-match T20I and ODI series starting on July 26, 2024. The team is yet to announce Hasaranga’s replacement as the new T20I captain.
