Ricky Ponting has stepped down as the head coach of Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after a seven-year tenure with the franchise. The legendary Australian cricketer, who was the head coach since 2018, led DC to their only IPL final in 2020 where they finished runners-up behind Mumbai Indians.
In a heartfelt post on social media, DC thanked Ricky Ponting for his dedication and contributions, saying “Seven summers of you being hands-on, but also hands-off, so that we could become better. As athletes, yes, but more importantly, as human beings.”

It remains to be seen whether DC will hire a new head coach or ask Team Director Sourav Ganguly to take over. The players’ retention is another key issue that will be discussed, with DC having to potentially let go of one overseas player due to the retention rules.
Under Ricky Ponting’s leadership, DC endured a tough start to the 2024 season but managed to win six of their last eight games. However, they eventually missed out on the playoffs due to their net run rate, finishing sixth on the points table.
