Karan Johar, one of Bollywood’s most prominent filmmakers, recently stated that the Indian film industry is currently facing a “creative crisis”. In an interview with journalist Faye D’Souza, Johar discussed the challenges the industry is grappling with, including managing footfalls, star remuneration, and the collapse of studios.
Karan Johar believes the industry’s creative crisis is primarily due to a shift in the audience’s taste, which has become more definitive. He suggests that directors from his generation, who grew up on a certain type of cinema, struggle to understand the preferences of audiences in India’s heartland. Johar argues that films don’t fail, but rather budgets do.

The filmmaker Karan Johar also dismissed the notion that he is an all-powerful producer who makes or breaks careers, stating that he is simply trying to keep his company sustainable during these difficult times. Johar’s latest directorial venture, “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, was a box office success.
