‘Kalki 2898 AD’ is a multi-genre film that blends science-fiction with Hindu mythology and the legend of Shambhala. The film’s title character Kalki is based on the prophesied 10th avatar of Lord Vishnu who will appear at the end of Kali Yuga to destroy evil and usher in a new era of righteousness.
In Hindu scriptures like the Mahabharata and Bhagavata Purana, Kalki is described as a striking figure who will be born to a Brahmin family in the village of Shambhala. He will be a valorous warrior, renowned scholar, and devout Shaivite who undergoes military training under Lord Parashurama.

Kalki will fight against an army of wrongdoers and mlecchas (barbarians) wielding a gleaming sword gifted by Lord Shiva. After vanquishing evil, he will establish the era of Satya Yuga in Shambhala, before retiring to Vaikuntha, Lord Vishnu’s abode.
While the exact timeline of Kalki’s arrival is debated, many Hindus believe the current Kali Yuga began 5,125 years ago after Lord Krishna’s death. It is prophesied to last 432,000 years, so 426,875 years remain before Satya Yuga begins with Kalki’s coming.
The film ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ is set in a dystopian future and features Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan in key roles. Despite the futuristic setting, the major characters can be traced to Hindu scriptures, though the film’s depiction of Kalki’s identity remains a mystery.
