Gautam Gambhir, the newly appointed head coach of the Indian cricket team, is reportedly pushing for the inclusion of former Dutch cricketer Ryan ten Doeschate in the team’s coaching staff.
Gautam Gambhir, who has requested a free hand in managing the team, wants the 44-year-old Ten Doeschate as one of his key associates[3]. The two recently collaborated at the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL, where Ten Doeschate served as the fielding coach during their victorious 2024 campaign.

Gautam Gambhir has praised Ten Doeschate’s selflessness and team spirit, saying he would be willing to take a bullet for him[4][5]. In a viral video, Gambhir highlighted an incident where Ten Doeschate carried drinks without any disappointment despite missing the playing XI in 2011, which taught Gambhir the value of selflessness.
However, the final decision rests with the BCCI, which has recently favored hiring only Indian personnel for coaching roles. The BCCI wants to retain T Dilip, a member of Rahul Dravid’s existing coaching team, as the fielding coach. If Ten Doeschate is not appointed as the fielding coach, he might be considered for an assistant coach position.

The ongoing deliberation revolves around the role Ten Doeschate could potentially take up if selected[3]. There are also reports about the inclusion of Abhishek Nayar, a former India all-rounder and integral part of the KKR backroom team, as an assistant coach in Gambhir’s team.
