R Ashwin, the celebrated Indian cricketer, has ventured into the world of chess by becoming a co-owner of the American Gambits franchise in the Global Chess League. Ashwin, along with business leaders Prachura PP and Venkat K Narayana, will own the American Gambits team, which replaces Chingari Gulf Titans in the league’s second edition.
The Global Chess League is a joint venture between Tech Mahindra and FIDE, the world chess governing body, featuring top chess players from around the globe competing in a unique team format. The second season of the league is scheduled to take place in London from October 3 to 12, 2024.

R Ashwin expressed his excitement about the new venture, stating, “We’re thrilled to introduce the American Gambits to the chess world. With a blend of strategic brilliance and unwavering determination, our team aims to redefine the game. As co-owner, I’m excited to witness their journey and contribute to their success.”
Legendary chess player Viswanathan Anand welcomed R Ashwin to the chess world, drawing a parallel between the cricketer’s success in bowling out the best batsmen and his potential to bring the same competitive spirit to the Global Chess League with the American Gambits. Anand also wished Ashwin luck, saying, “May your rooks and bishops be as unstoppable as your off-spinners!”

The Global Chess League’s second edition will feature six franchises, including Alpine SG Pipers, PBG Alaskan Knights, Ganges Grandmasters, Mumba Masters, and defending champions Triveni Continental Kings. Each team will play 10 matches in a double round-robin format, with the winner of each match decided in a best-of-six board scoring system.
